About MEDC
As the only coalition of its kind in Washington state,
MEDC of King County plays a critical role as advocate,
catalyst, leader, convener and educator on issues
concerning people of color.
ADVOCATING FOR COMMUNITIES OF COLOR
Advocacy is the backbone of all our
efforts. We work with community-based health, human
services, economic development agencies, legislators,
government officials, school districts and others to
influence and shape public policies affecting people of
color.
HELPING LEADERS LEAD
Meaningful change happens when everyday leaders are
equipped to transform vision into reality, so we work
to ensure leaders of color are confident, capable and
armed with the knowledge they need to successfully
advocate for the communities in which they work. MEDC
empowers and strengthens leaders of color through
direct political and advocacy actions, networking and
opportunities to serve in civic leadership
positions.
PROMOTING CULTURAL COMPETENCY
Cultural competency means understanding the values,
principles and customs of different cultures. Respect
for an individual’s cultural domains and
experiences is essential if service providers and
others are to effectively engage people of color. Our
Cultural Competency Training and Education program
helps organizations recognize and implement culturally
competent practices, enabling them to better meet the
diverse needs of all communities in King County.
OUR WORK
20 years of excellence
People of color in our region have made significant
gains over the last few decades, but there is more work
to be done. The Minority Executive Directors Coalition
of King County advocates for communities of color,
helps leaders lead and builds the cultural competency
of individuals and organizations to improve the lives
of people of color in our region and across the
state.
MEDC works in partnership with our members and the
community at large to educate the public about issues
affecting communities of color. We leverage collective
influence, expertise and passion to advocate for
economic, political and social justice.
