MULTI-ETHNIC COALITION OF COMMUNITY LEADERS OF COLOR
TO HONOR LOCAL CHILD & GRANDMOTHER FOR THEIR
HEALTH CARE REFORM ADVOCACY
MEDC to Honor Marcelas & Gina Owen’s and two other local
Groups for their advocacy to improve the lives of people of color
Seattle – The Minority Executive Directors Coalition (MEDC) will honor Marcelas Owens and his grandmother, Gina, for their tireless work to help pass national health care reform legislation. MEDC will present Marcelas and Gina with the President’s Award at their annual awards banquet and celebration on April 9, 2010 beginning at 4:30pm at the Muckleshoot Indian Casino in Auburn, WA. The President’s Award honors individuals and organizations that advocate on behalf of MEDC’s mission of equality, equity and social justice.
MEDC is the longest-standing and broadest-based multi-ethnic coalition of its kind in the region. Unique in its composition and for more than 28 years, MEDC has successfully sustained and nurtured cooperation and unity among its members – most of whom work in private, non-profit health, human services, community economic development, low-income housing and educational agencies in Seattle/King County and all of whom are committed to MEDC’s mission of achieving equity, equality and racial, economic and social justice for all in our Region. MEDC accomplishes our mission through public policy research and development, advocacy, civic engagement and cultural competency training, community organizing, outreach, networking and members and leadership development.
Marcelas Owens and his grandmother, Gina, live in Seattle’s Central District. At 11-years of age, Marcelas became the face of health care reform and stood next to President Obama as he signed the new legislation into law. Two years ago, Marcelas’ mother and Gina’s daughter, Tiffany lost her life because she was uninsured. She worked as an assistant manager at a fast food restaurant. She had health coverage through her job. But in September 2006, she got sick and missed a great deal of work. Tiffany’s employer gave her an ultimatum: Make up the lost time or lose your job. Due to her illness, she couldn’t make up the time and did lose her job. When she lost her job, she lost her insurance. And without coverage and the care she needed, in June 2007, Tiffany lost her life. Gina lost her daughter and Marcelas and his two siblings lost their mom. Marcelas and Gina took Tiffany’s story to Washington, DC and helped to pass the sweeping health care reform which will help millions of Americans obtain and keep health insurance.
In addition, MEDC will honor Rebuilding our Economic Future Coalition with the “Bernie Whitebear Coalition Building Award” and the Pacific Northwest People’s Institute with the “Advocacy on Behalf of Communities of Color Award”. The Rebuilding our Economic Future Coalition an emerging broad-based, statewide coalition of organizations and individuals committed to securing the state’s economic future by advocating for passage of a humane and sensible budget for 2010. Coalition members are concerned about the devastating long-term consequences of an all-cuts budget and specifically how it will affect communities of color and those most impacted by regressive taxation. The proposed cuts in the governor’s budget will undermine the shared values of providing a first-class education to our children, providing basic help to those in need and protecting our quality of life. The coalition supports a full dialogue toward a fair and humane budget that includes not just targeted cuts and reforms to make government more efficient, but a full discussion of potential revenue options as well.
The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond is a multi-racial collective of anti-racist community organizers and educators committed to strengthening an anti-racist movement. Founded by Ronald Chisom and Jim Dunn it is based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The People’s Institute is a regional office of the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond that was developed in 2001 by a group of 20 organizers who had been applying Undoing Racism principles to local organizing work for a number of years.
PINW provides coordination of training and technical assistance to individuals and organizations seeking to bring social change and racial justice.

Immigration Reform Rally, April 10th – Partners strongly encouraged to participate!
Washington Immigration Reform Coalition for America, which OneAMerica staffs, is holding a huge rally for immigration reform on April 10 in Occidental Park. The goal is to get 10,000 at the rally. All Win/Win partners are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to participate by sponsoring the rally, turning people out, and contributing financially for the rally. The costs of the rally are going to be about $90,000 because organizers are bringing about 100 buses from across the state filled with immigrants. This will be one of the largest mobilizations of people of color in the state and is hugely important to the long-term base building we all want to have happen. This is a great opportunity to show that we really are a multi-issue coalition—and that we can pivot from organizing around revenue to organizing around immigration reform. Plus, it will be THE place to be on April 10! There is a sign-up on the website—please sign yourself and others up here. http://www.weareoneamerica.org/april10
Time is short – and a major push in the short-run will encourage the President and Congress to act THIS YEAR!
